Donald Trump news: US President demands ‘thank you’ from Americans over coronavirus | World | News

The US President on Tuesday said he wants to be thanked and praised by the public and media for what he is doing. He said: “We’ve done a fantastic job. “The only thing we haven’t done well is to get good press.

“We’ve done a fantastic job but it hasn’t been appreciated.

“Even the closing down of the borders, which had never been done, and not only did we close them but we closed it early.

“The press doesn’t like writing about it.”

Two months ago, Trump relentlessly played down the coronavirus but now he has changed his tone.

He is now claiming that he always saw the virus as pandemic, despite minimising the risk posed to the US from the coronavirus.

He said at a White House press briefing: “I mean, I have seen that, where people actually liked it. But I didn’t feel different.

“I’ve always known, this is a real – this is a real – this is a pandemic.

“I felt it was a pandemic long before it was called a pandemic.

The US President even said previously that the Democrats and the media were hyping the situation and that it was just a “hoax”.

But on Monday he acknowledged that the situation was “bad” and that the virus is not under control.

He even admitted that the country might be heading into a recession and that American life may not go back to normal for months.

Trump used his late-January decision to restrict travel from China as evidence that he has always viewed the situation as “urgent”.

On March 9, less than ten days ago he tweeted: “So last year 37,000 Americans died from the common Flu. It averages between 27,000 and 70,000 per year.

“Nothing is shut down, life & the economy go on. At this moment there are 546 confirmed cases of CoronaVirus, with 22 deaths. Think about that!”

He then said the next day: “And we’re prepared, and we’re doing a great job with it. And it will go away. Just stay calm. It will go away.”

He added: “It’s really working out. And a lot of good things are going to happen.”
