As people up and down the country stay inside and self-isolate due to the coronavirus outbreak, they might not be thinking too much about those outside their house.
But at this time of great uncertainty and anxiety, we should all spare a thought for medical staff who are working hard to treat people fighting the illness.
Not only are these people saving lives – they’ve also had to make some truly heartbreaking sacrifices in order to be able to help.
A doctor has gone viral on social media after sharing her own story of sacrifice so she can be on the frontline in this time of need.
The doctor, known only as Seema, took to Twitter to encourage people to practice social-distancing.
But her message was so much more than just that.
She wrote: “I’m a Dr. I’m about to separate from my family within my home for ?? months. So that I can keeping treating you, whilst trying to keep my family safe.
“It hurts. No hugs from my girls, no cuddles from my partner.
“PLS socially distance NOW, to make my sacrifice worth it.”
Her post has garnered over 313,000 likes and been retweeted more than 75,000 times.
And she’s not the only one making sacrifices.
Rachel Patzer also revealed her family’s struggle on Twitter, writing: “My spouse is a physician in the emergency dept, and is actively treating coronavirus patients.
“We just made the difficult decision for him to isolate & move into our garage apartment for the foreseeable future as he continues to treat patients.
“We have a three-week-old newborn and two young kids and just can’t risk it. It pains me to wonder how many weeks will go by that he won’t get to hold our new baby or see our older kids.
“This is one example of the sacrifice that healthcare workers are making for our communities.”
She added: “As I attempt to home school my kids (alone) with a new baby who screams if she isn’t held, I am worried about the health of my spouse and my family. This was not how I envisioned my maternity leave, but I know things could be worse.”
People on social media thanked them for making the difficult choices and shared messages of support.
One person said: “One thanks, two thanks, a billion. Thanks just won’t ever cut it for the beautiful selfless sacrifice you are making for all of us. We have so much gratitude for you and all those awesome souls doing the same. All the gratitude. Majestic gratitude.”
Another commented: “I can’t thank you enough for what you do. There’s just no way. Please stay as safe as you can.”
A third replied: “Thanks to both of you for the sacrifices you’re making in service to others. Stay safe.”
