Coronavirus world live updates: North Korea admits troubled medical system amid virus

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has called for urgent improvements to the country’s heath care system as the coronavirus continues to sweep across the world.

The country insists no-one has been sickened by the deadly COVID-19 virus yet, but experts doubt that claim is true and say an epidemic in the North could be devastating due its chronic lack of medical supplies and outdated health care infrastructure.

“Frankly speaking … there is not a modern medical and health care facility even in our capital city,” Mr Kim said at a ceremony in Pyongyang on Tuesday, according to state media.

It comes as a baby and a nine-month-old boy have been diagnosed with the bug in the United Kingdom, where grocery stores are only just beginning to introduce buying limits.
