Coronavirus news: Germany’s latest project to end ALL lockdowns revealed | World | News

Researchers want to bring in the documents for citizens not at risk of contracting Covid-19. Scientists in Germany are now using antibodies in test participants to find out which of them have had the illness and healed, Der Spiegel reports.

The team plans to test 100,000 people at a time, issuing documentation to those who have built up an immunity.

Findings will then help experts assess how and when the lockdown should conclude.

Researchers will use the data as they advise the government on when schools will be re-opened and mass gatherings permitted once again.

The Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research in Braunschweig is overseeing the project.

Researchers will conduct blood tests over the next few weeks to look for antibodies produced in carriers of the illness.

“Those who are immune can then be given a vaccination certificate that would, for example, allow them to be exempt from any (lockdown-related) restrictions on their work,” said project-leading epidemiologist Gerard Krause.

The tests will also offer a clearer look at how many people in Germany have contracted the coronavirus.

The news comes as German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s handling of the pandemic has secured a boost in poll ratings.

Angela Merkel ordered the cancellation of all public events with expected crowds in excess of 1,000 people earlier on this month.

Ms Merkel said health experts estimated up to 70 percent of the population could be infected by the potentially deadly flu-like virus as she insisted introducing measures to slow its spread was essential.

She previously told a news conference in Berlin: “You have to understand that if the virus is there, and the population has no immunity yet to this virus, there are no vaccines and no therapy so far, a high percentage – experts say 60 to 70 percent – of the population will be infected.”

She said the priority was to slow the spread of the disease “so all the measures we are taking are of the greatest significance because they are giving us time – it does matter what we do, it is not in vain”.

She promised to do what was needed to counter the effects of the coronavirus and that would happen in agreement with European partners.

She said: “The message should be: we will do what is necessary as a country, and that is also together with Europe.”

The German Chancellor eve refused to set a cap on costs when dealing with the crisis.

She said “we will do what we need to get through this and then at the end we will look at what that means for our budget.”

Meanwhile, in the UK, concerns are mounting over the accuracy of official figures relating to the disease.

A hospital in London has recorded almost three times more deaths than official figures show.

King’s College Hospital Trust has recorded 31 deaths from Covid-19.

However, national figures show just 11 deaths at its three hospitals due to a time lag in updating the figures.

As a result there have been a number of claims the official death toll for coronavirus is far lower than the true number of casualties reported by hospitals.

The message sent to staff at King’s College Hospital Trust stated: “The number of deaths reported at King’s in national figures is below what they are experiencing.

“It is not just King’s but a number of other trusts and the centre has been made aware.”

A hospital source has since said the deaths required official confirmation and that it took time after a patient died for the cause to be confirmed.
