Coronavirus: Met Gala 2020 event postponed ‘indefinitely’

The Met Gala will not be taking place on the first Monday in May this year.

Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour announced on Monday that in light of the coronavirus pandemic, the much-anticipated opening of the Costume Institute’s “About Time” exhibit – and its accompanying star-studded red carpet – would be postponed indefinitely.

“Due to the unavoidable and responsible decision by the Metropolitan Museum to close its doors, ‘About Time’ and the opening night gala will be postponed to a later date,” Wintour, who has served as the chairwoman of the event since 1995, wrote in her latest Vogue editor’s letter.

“In the meantime, we will give you a preview of this extraordinary exhibition in our forthcoming May issue.”

It comes after reports the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, was to mark her exit from royal life and re-emergence in Hollywood at the prestigious fashion event.

Meghan, 38, was invited alongside Vogue editor Edward Enninful to attend the prestigious fashion bash, which was scheduled on May 4.

With a theme based on Virginia Woolf’s Orlando – in which the central character changes sex – the former Suits actress, 38, was reportedly expected to adopt a “glamorous androgynous” look.

The Met Gala is one of the most talked-about events in tinsel town, known for its strictly A-list guest list and wild fashion expression.

News of Meghan’s invite came a month after she and Prince Harry announced they were stepping back from their royal duties and dividing their time between the UK and North America.

The pair just finished their final royal engagements in London and are said to be in lockdown in Canada.

A source added: “The Met Gala is for the who’s who of show business.

“Naturally, Meghan was one of the first names on the guest list, and Edward’s team are excited that the two will go together.

“Meghan is keen to step out occasionally without Harry so that she can establish herself once more in Hollywood.”

As part of her announcement, Wintour also endorsed Joe Biden for president, saying she was “appalled” by how President Donald Trump had handled the pandemic.
